Cobble Hill Embraces YEAR OF THE PIE with “Eat Pie and Shop”

Community Hopes Top Food Trend Will Raise Much-Needed Funds
Pie Social & Celebrity-Judged Contest; Holiday Artisan Gift Fair & Kid’s Activities

Brooklyn, NY – Cobble Hill’s PS29 is counting on this year’s top food trend to bring in much-needed funds this December – to enable the school to continue current programs after the year’s debilitating cuts.  The school’s third annual “Eat Pie and Shop” – to take place Sunday December 4 from 11am to 4pm – will include a Holiday Gift Fair, Pie Social and celebrity-judged baking contest, with proceeds benefiting the local school’s PTA and the current programs.
“We’re counting on the demise of cupcakes, and the rise of the PIE,” says Melanie Raneri Woods, Principal of PS 29. “It’s been a challenging year, but Eat Pie and Shop has followed the tend, and over the years has grown into one of our largest fundraisers – a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon, tasting pies and shopping for family and friends!”

Baking Contest with Celebrity Judges
Gift Fair; Toys for Tots Donations Accepted

The pie competition will be an afternoon highlight, as bakers are invited to bring pies to be judged by parents and a panel of celebrity judges.  The panel will include Gail Simmons, Food & Wine and “Top Chef,” Dannielle Kyrillos, “Top Chef: Just Desserts, Chef Marc Anthony Bynum of Food Network’s Chopped, and MooBurger and local restaurant owner Jeff Lederman, of Strong Place, Bocca Lupo and Nectar.  The winner will receive a gift package from Food & Wine and bragging rights for the year!  Judging will take place at 1pm.

Local bakers – both amateurs and professionals – will supply a wide variety of pies, for $5 per tasting ticket.  Pies will range in flavors, from fruit to creamy, savory and nut, so shoppers can come to shop, eat lunch and get dessert. To top off the pie, kids and adults are invited to try delicious frozen custard from Danny Meyer’s, Shake Shack, which will make its home in Downtown Brooklyn in mid-December.  And make sure to feed your savory side, with famous ‘Grumble Grumble’ grilled cheese sandwiches donated by Brooklyn Farmacy & Soda Fountain.

The Gift Fair will highlight local artisans, craftspeople and merchants, and promises to provide a huge variety of handmade, local and sustainable gift-giving choices, from jewelry, to exclusive eco-friendly Brooklyn clothing from Dumbo’s Half Pint Citizens to hand made and classic toys from Fork + Pencil.  More than twenty different vendors from the local Brooklyn flea markets will be displaying and selling their handmade goods.

Toys for Tots donations will be hand collected by our US Marines!  Consider purchasing toys for donation from Fork + Pencil or Half Pint Citizens, who will be donating all profits to PS 29.  And while you shop, children of all ages can participate in holiday craft workshops hosted by art teachers from Children’s Museum of Arts or face painting by Mini Max Toys & Cuts.  Kids can also make holiday gifts the whole family will cherish by bringing (or making) artwork to transfer onto Poloppo’s t-shirts, mugs, canvas and more. Or give a smile!  Professional photographers will be holding holiday photo shoots, with all proceeds to PS 29.
